In the initial session with Dean we went over the module guide and got an insight into what to expect from the module. I feel confident and excited about the topic as Time does not hold many definitive answers. It will be a lot of fun to explore the concepts in relation to film & a wider philosophical view.
We watched La Jetèe, which was an interesting black and white short posing many questions about time, memory and perception. It is a subjective journey for the main protagonist yet is portrayed through the objective voiceover dialogue and use of still imagery.
Like I said, the film uses voiceover and still images to show the narrative but the is actual dialogue; although hushed in whispers. This perhaps suggests the fleeting nature of time and the scientists desire to manipulate it through the main character. They speak as though they have no time. The images show a direct progression through the story but are fragmented which might parralel with the portrayl of time in the piece. It is linear yet circular in narrative due to the travelling between past, present and future. It makes you consider time as not just a sequence of events but an interlocked tapestry of events which affect and react to one another. It appears chaotic in the film. It also raises questions about memory and a persons ability to differentiate memory from idea to give them an accurate description of their past. In the protagonist's case, his past directly affects his future and ewhat may be seen as an insight into his existence, could also be seen as a doom.
