Drama: Stanley Kubrick's The Shining

One of my favourite movies is Stanley Kubrick's 'The Shining'. The style and tone of this movie gives it an edge over many conventional horror films which is something I'd like to draw upon in our film. I am particularly interested in the use of Steady-Cam as I love the fluid motion it offers and I feel it would be quite appropriate as our actor wanders the halls of Castle Market. I like the idea the moving camera supposes which that something is following or that there is an external presence at work. I really like the idea of starting the film with a moving track of our actor as he walks through the busy market.

Another feature of the shining is the sound. I think this adds greatly to the atmospheric tension of the film and I would like the sound in our movie to also reflect and evoke as sense of growing fear and terror. I would like the music to be ominous and could possibly include low moans and whispers which we could use within the film as foley.  Kubrick made use of  “De Natura Sonoris #1&2” by Polish composer Krzysztof Penderecki, which is a beautifully chilling piece of music. I would love to create a similar minimal effect with less of an orchestral style.

As our location is a closed indoor marketplace, I can draw parallels between that and the Overlook Hotel in The Shining. I would like to capture the market's emptiness and provide my audience with a sense of space which will hopefully evoke a sense of isolation in our protagonist.

I have found a brilliant website called The Overlook Hotel which is filled with information about the making of The Shining as well as many amazing photos of the production and other Shining related material.

Another angle I am thinking about in terms of cinematography is the use of one-point perspective framing, commonly used by Kubrick as well, as a way of creating an unsettling yet stylistically crafted shot,
