I recently watched the film 9 for the first time. Although it being a kids a movie at heart I was pleasantly surprised by the aesthetic look of the film as well as some of the dark implications towards the end. I feel, having watched it that it falls neatly into the category of family movies, giving children something to enjoy but also not subjecting adults to the bore of childish cliches. Baiscally, the film has it's moments and looks damn great. Sounds good too, lets talk about sound.

The soundtrack to this ovie alos stands out and adds to the sense of emptiness in the wastes as well as adding humor and action to many sequences. |
As the film is an animation, everything in this movie is crafted and added during post-production, the sound designers would have to create a sound-scape for each scene without very little to go on, other than notes and ques from what is seen on screen. This is done very well, each sound holds it's own and allows the audience to engage with the concept of a post-apocalyptic world. The fantasy element also plays a big role on how the sound is produced as the protagonists are little dolls, able to hide in tin cans, therefore their perspective (which is naturally adopted by the audience) would emphasize sounds of everyday objects because they are simply larger.

Possibly the biggest let down is Elijah Wood's 6 year old voice. |
