I want to talk about this Brian Eno album, Ambient 4: On Land (1982)
Eno is a master of spatial sound, he creates soundscapes and environments with music that transcends regular ambient music. His music is not only meant to be heard, but felt, and imagined and I often find myself drifting away to it. On Land is a beautiful album, and will be a major influence on my In Absentia sound. I first played the video whilst listening to this album and it immediately flooded me with ideas, particularly in terms of my music and ambience. I found an interview with Eno regarding this album, it can be found here.
I like the dark undertones of the music, as well as the haunting chimes we hear, which really gives me a sense of reminiscence and ominous fear which i think suits In Absentia tonally.
My favourite question and answer in the interview goes like this:
MUSICIAN: The music on On Land strikes me as a bit spooky. Was that intentional?
ENO: Yes, a little bit, a nice kind of spooky. It sort of gives you the willies, you know, that slightly thrilling sense that you're almost in some other time, not quite in touch with the present.
Eno pretty much nails the mood I want to create for In Absentia, I'll be listening to a lot of his work to try and develop my concept further.
Just because I can.
