Art Organisations & Opportunities For Graduates

Artangel

Artangel is a London based organisation which specialises in contemporary art installations and exhibitions. For the last two decades, it has been commissioning projects that incorporate a great variety of art mediums. Their site states that "Artangel's work is powered by the belief that artists are capable of creating visionary works which impact upon the way we view our world, our times and ourselves in unusual and enduring ways." (Artangel. (2014). About Artangel. Available: http://www.artangel.org.uk/about_us. Last accessed 20th April 2014). They have produced work by many different artists over the years including Steve Mcqueen and Brian Eno and so are no strangers to innovation, as an aspiring film artist, the opportunity to work on an Artangel commission would be a dream come true. The Artangel collection is a relatively new initiative which aims to bring work commissioned by Artangel to galleries and museums across The United Kingdom. As co-directors, James Lingwood and Michael Morris summarise Artangel's aims, stating that "Over the past two decades, we've been fortunate to collaborate with a range of remarkable artists whose powerful visions have set a new benchmark in film and video. We want their work to be seen as broadly as possible and under the best available conditions". (Lingwood, J. Morris, M. (2012). The Artangel Collection. Available: http://issuu.com/theartangelcollection/docs/artangel-epub-18/5?e=0. Last accessed 20th April 2014.) To have work in the Artangel collection gives it the potential to be seen in many different spaces around the country, which is a great way of getting more people to see the artwork as well as creating exposure for an artist that may otherwise just have their work shown in a small exhibition based only in London. They have already been working in partnership with The Whitworth Art Gallery, as Mary Griffiths, the Whitworth Curator states, "Works from The Artangel Collection were a great success at the Whitworth with more than 37,000 visitors seeing the exhibition in the summer of 2011". (Griffiths, M. (2012). Working with Museums and Galleries. Available: http://issuu.com/theartangelcollection/docs/artangel-epub-18/38?e=0. Last accessed 20th April 2014.) This shows the scale at which these artworks can be shown to the general public and highlights how there is a significant interest in film and video installation work.

Arts Admin

Arts Admin is a registered charity organisation and is part of the Arts Council England National Portfolio with an annual turnover of over a million pounds. they support over five hundred artists every year and give money directly to artists but also work closely with them in order to fully realise the project. their main aim is to "produce new, creative arts events for audiences across the UK and around the world". (Arts Admin. (2013). Key Facts & Figures. Available: http://www.artsadmin.co.uk/about/key-facts-and-figures. Last accessed 20th April 2014.) In 2012/13 over one hundred and eighty thousand people saw their work which show hows it is a great opportunity for new artists. Arts admin also pride themselves on their training programmes, they create special traineeships for young people looking for their first job in the arts which could a route I could take in order to get a proper understanding of how film installations and art exhibitions are run. looking more specifically at young artists and graduates Art Admin state that "We support contemporary artists through a programme of projects, events and services. Specialising in work that is live, we collaborate with artists of all ages, from those with established careers to those who are new to making work". (Arts Admin. (2013). Artist Support For Young People. Available: http://www.artsadmin.co.uk/artist-support/for-young-people. Last accessed 20th April 2014.) They also go on to say that they offer advice, curate projects and exhibitions alongside the artist and use their connections with the Arts Council England to promote the artist and the work. the opportunities which Arts Admin offer could really help me fulfil my exhibition idea and they would also work alongside me to help create the installations which is a valuable asset for a new artist.
