Waking Life (2001) is a animated film about dreams and the inability to wake from them. The story of this movie consists of a guy who is traveling through his dreams; talking to people about life, existence, reality and the dreamworld. He learns to become a lucid dreamer but finds that he is unable to wake as each time he does he finds that he is still dreaming. The concept for our short comes from this idea, we thought that false awakenings are a strange and unexplained phenomena that can occur to a person whilst dreaming. The sense of reality when this happens tricks the brain into thinking you are actually awake, a concept I find both scary and intriguing. The visual side of Waking Like is what makes the film stand out to me, the style of animation allows everything in the film to be moving and 'floating' in shot, which is incredibly surreal to watch but also kind of intuitive when discussing dreams as it evokes a sense of the world around the character being made up and liable to change at any given moment.
